The HYZEN Site Screener gives a first read on any location for a green hydrogen project. Click a point on the map and it looks up public data for that point: solar and wind resource, rainfall and distance to the coast for water, distance to the electricity grid and to the nearest port, and whether the point sits inside or near a protected area.
Each factor becomes a sub-score from 0 to 100, and the six combine into one overall suitability score with a short label, from low to exceptional suitability. A written summary explains the result. Use it to compare candidate sites and build a shortlist before spending on detailed studies.
| Sub-score | What it measures | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Solar | Long-term average annual solar irradiation on a horizontal surface | NASA POWER |
| Wind | Long-term average wind speed at 50 m above ground | NASA POWER |
| Water | The more favourable of distance to the coast or annual rainfall | Natural Earth coastlines, NASA POWER |
| Grid | Distance to the nearest mapped substation or high-voltage line | OpenInfraMap (OpenStreetMap data) |
| Logistics | Distance to the nearest port | NGA World Port Index |
| Environmental | Whether the point is inside or near a protected area | WDPA (UNEP-WCMC) |
The overall score is a weighted combination of the six sub-scores. PVGIS also supplies an estimated annual PV yield, shown in the results; it does not change the solar sub-score. The Screener ranks suitability and does not calculate the levelized cost of hydrogen, costs or full-load hours.
A screen of 23.70° N, 15.93° W, on the Dakhla peninsula, run on 26 October 2026, scored 88 / 100 (Exceptional).
Scores can change when the public datasets are updated. Re-run the point on the map above for the current result.
Yes. You can run 3 screens per day in each browser, with no account.
NASA POWER for solar, wind, temperature and rainfall; PVGIS (EU JRC) for an estimated PV yield; OpenInfraMap (OpenStreetMap data) for the grid; the NGA World Port Index for ports; Natural Earth for the coastline; and the WDPA for protected areas.
No. The Site Screener ranks site suitability. It does not calculate LCOH, costs or full-load hours. Any cost figure in the AI-written summary is not calculated by the Screener.
It is a first filter, not a site study. Resource figures are long-term averages, not measurements at the site. Distances are straight lines to the nearest mapped feature, and mapped grid data can be incomplete. If a lookup fails, that sub-score uses a neutral midpoint and the result says which data was unavailable.
Use the score to shortlist sites. Electrolyzer sizing, LCOH modelling and pre-FEED engineering are what the HYZEN platform is built for, and it is in early access.
