Tools for early project work
Free HYZEN tools, each listed with the public data sources it actually uses.
Site Screener
A first read on a location: six sub-scores and an overall suitability score, built from public resource, infrastructure and protected-area data.
Site Screener
Screen a site against live resource data
The free HYZEN Site Screener scores any location worldwide on solar, wind, grid access, port distance and protected areas.
Data sources
What it does
You pick a point on the map. The Site Screener looks up public data for that point, turns it into six sub-scores from 0 to 100, and combines them into one overall suitability score with a short label. It is a first filter for comparing candidate sites, not a design or cost study.
Data sources
| Sub-score | What it measures | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Solar | Long-term average annual solar irradiation on a horizontal surface | NASA POWER |
| Wind | Long-term average wind speed at 50 m above ground | NASA POWER |
| Water | The more favourable of two indicators: distance to the coast, or annual rainfall | Natural Earth coastlines, NASA POWER |
| Grid | Distance to the nearest mapped substation or high-voltage line | OpenInfraMap (OpenStreetMap data) |
| Logistics | Distance to the nearest port | NGA World Port Index |
| Environmental | Whether the point lies inside or near a protected area; strictly protected categories score lowest | WDPA (UNEP-WCMC) |
PVGIS (EU JRC) supplies an estimated annual PV yield for a fixed, optimally tilted module at the point. It appears in the results text and the written summary. It does not change the solar sub-score.
What the output means
The overall score is a weighted combination of the six sub-scores, mapped to a label that runs from low to exceptional suitability. A higher score means the point looks more promising on these public datasets. Use it to rank and shortlist sites.
The Site Screener ranks site suitability. It does not calculate LCOH, costs or full-load hours.
Each result also comes with a three-sentence written summary of the figures. It is produced by an AI model, or by a fixed template when the model is not available. Any cost or full-load-hour figure in that summary is not calculated by the Site Screener.
Accuracy and limitations
- Solar, wind, temperature and rainfall figures are long-term averages from NASA POWER, not measurements at the site. They do not capture local terrain or year-to-year variation.
- Distances run in a straight line to the nearest mapped feature. Mapped data can be incomplete, especially grid infrastructure in OpenStreetMap.
- If a data lookup fails, that sub-score uses a neutral midpoint, and the results list which data was unavailable.
- If PVGIS is unavailable, the PV yield is estimated from the NASA POWER irradiation instead.
- Free use is limited to 3 screens per day in each browser.
When to use the full platform instead
Use the Site Screener to shortlist locations. Electrolyzer sizing, LCOH modelling and pre-FEED engineering are what the HYZEN platform is built for, and it is in early access. Request access.
